A Chicago church and a suburban synagogue have offered sanctuary to Wisconsin state senators who fled to Illinois to block the repeal of public employees’ collective bargaining rights.

The 14 missing Democrats have left the Wisconsin Senate without a quorum needed to pass the legislation favored by Gov. Scott Walker and the chamber’s Republican majority.

Rev. Jason Coulter, pastor of Ravenswood United Church of Christ in Chicago, said he was offering the runaway senators sanctuary, hospitality, and “shelter from the storm.”

Rabbi Bruce Elder said the Wisconsin lawmakers also would be welcome at his synagogue — Congregation Hakafa in Glencoe, Illinois.

It was unclear if any of the missing Democrats were staying at either house of worship.
