Thanks to the help of a non-profit litigation group that is dedicated to advancing religious freedom, Maryville, Tennessee has awarded its citizens a Christmas victory.

In the past, the city has sponsored a Christmas event that included a Christmas tree, lights and ornaments, as well as religious and secular Christmas songs and the reading of the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke.

“The reading has been a tradition of this event for over 22 years, but it was cut short last year when a member of the legal staff gave an opinion that said it would be unconstitutional to read the story of Christmas,” reports Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel.

So his organization prepared to submit permit applications if the city stuck by the restriction, but that action was eventually unnecessary.

“At first, they wanted to have a separate meeting where they could have their own reading, but the city refused,” Staver explains. “Now, the city, however, after receiving letters from Liberty Counsel, has decided that it would reverse its position and continue this long-standing tradition.”

So his firm is congratulating Maryville for not censoring the holiday based on unsound legal advice — and for honoring Christ in the city’s Christmas celebration.
