A spokesman with Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) calls the release of South Korean Christians taken hostage, while in Afghanistan, an answer to prayer.
This week it was announced that negotiations between Taliban terrorists and the South Korean government has led to the imminent release of the remaining hostages. Twenty-three church volunteers were kidnapped six weeks ago — two were killed and two were released before this week’s announcement.
Todd Nettleton with VOM says the situation shows the dangers Christian missionaries face in Afghanistan. “I think it takes a great deal of courage to go into a place like Afghanistan, a place where foreigners are not safe, where nobody is completely safe — to go there to be the hands and face of Christ to the people there,” he shares.
He says that as the stories of their captivity are told, people will also hear about the courage these individuals showed. He also says it is important that Christians in the U.S. and around the world are made aware of the persecution others face in delivering the gospel.
“The most important and the most powerful thing that we can do on their behalf is simply get on our knees and pray for them, and I think this story shows what can happen when people around the world pray,” says Nettleton.
The deal that led to the hostage’s release reportedly includes a South Korean troop pullout and an agreement by South Korea to prevent its Christian missionaries from working in Afghanistan in the future.
